Former Huskies Star Succumbs to Cancer

HUSKIE ATHLETICS SAD TO LOSE ONE OF ITS OWN
The University of Saskatchewan Huskies are saddened by the loss of former men’s volleyball player Darcey Busse.
Busse, 47, passed away Saturday after a battle with cancer. He is survived by wife Cindy, who is also an alumni of Huskie Athletics, and two sons Matthew and Eric.
“Darcey Busse is a large piece of not just the men’s volleyball history but Huskie Athletics history,” said athletic director Bill Seymour.
“He made a difference in everything he did while with our organization and set the tone of excellence that Huskie Athletics has. He is just one of many important people to bless our programs and he was a true blessing. Huskie Athletics shares our deepest sympathy with the Busse family.”
Busse, a six-foot-six, middle, played for the men’s volleyball program for five seasons beginning in 1979. He took the 1981-82 and 1982-83 season off to focus on national volleyball as a member of the Canadian junior and senior national volleyball teams.
While earning a bachelor of education, he was selected to the Canada West all-star team five times and was an Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union All-Canadian three times. He was also the CIAU MVP in 1984 and 1986 and helped the team to two conference championships in 1980 and 1985. In 1986, he was also awarded the E. Kent Phillips Trophy as male athlete of the year for Huskie Athletics.
He won two CIAU silvers and a CIAU bronze medal and was the all-star of the tournament in 1984-85 when the Huskies lost to Manitoba in the final. He is also a member of the University of Saskatchewan Athletic Wall of Fame.
He graduated from Central High School in Moose Jaw and made a home in Outlook where he was a high school teacher.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 16 at 11 a.m. at the Outlook Alliance Church and the internment at the Elbow Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to The Outlook and District Health Foundation of The Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements are in care of the Outlook Funeral Chapel.
