Selkirk Royals claim 18U women’s title
by Andrew Bucholtz
The Selkirk Royals (Selkirk, MB) handily beat the Canuck Pulse (Calgary, AB) in this afternoon’s 18U women’s national final in front of a packed house at the Carleton Ravens’ Nest in Alumni Hall. The Royals jumped out to a quick lead on the strength of some solid blocking by setter Megan Cyr and middle hitter Victoria Ryshytylo, as well as excellent defensive play. The Pulse put in a good effort, but Selkirk led all the way through the first set, and claimed the opening frame 25-12. In the second set, it was more of the same as the Royals jumped out to a 13-4 lead. They scored eight points quickly to take a 21-9 lead, but then the Canuck Pulse fought back to pull within seven. In the end, though, the Royals were just too much for the Pulse, and they claimed the second set 25-17, sealing the championship in the process.
